Professional Women Photographers (PWP) of New York has chosen two of Susan K. Friedland's photographs for inclusion in its first online gallery. Titled "Dreamscapes," the exhibition is a look at images that tell a story of mystery, ambiguity, whimsical distortion, or simple the unexpected. Images that create a sense of wonder and curiosity in the viewer.
Friedland's winning entries include two very different types of images. "Grey Ghost Trees," a photo taken during an early morning, foggy hike through the Sapphire Mountains in North Carolina, is evocative of an ethereal landscape, while "English Nun," a serendipitous juxtaposition of life and religion that occurred from the reflection of a poster in a retail shop that appears to float on the street outside.
"Everything about this photo is a stark contrast," said Friedland. "You have the stark white from the nun's habit playing against the dark clothing on the people going about their business on a dreary London day, as well as messages of retail vs. religion, and the poster itself with its strong good girl (nun)/bad girl message (with cigarette and red lipstick). The bad girl nun looks like she's floating out on the street while passersby seem to walk right through her without a second glance."
The gallery is accessible through www.pwponline.org beginning the second week of April 2022. All photos presented in the exhibition are for sale and may be purchased directly from PWP. Friedland's photo also are available for purchase by contacting her through her website.
